The Tokyo-based development team has collated feedback on the series' strengths and weaknesses via fan forums, both ardent and casual PES players and press comment, and has incorporated a wide range of requests in the new game.

PES 2010 focuses on enhancing the excitement of matches between players, making for a truly challenging experience that will constantly test the player. Intuitive zonal defending will cover spaces and players need to look constantly for new ways to attack. PES 2010 focuses on being a real football simulation, as it requires both strategic play and quick reactions, as in real life.

PES 2010 has undergone a major visual revamp, with its celebrated player likenesses and animations now even closer to those of real-life players -- including live player expressions to be depicted with an improved lighting system which differentiates between various conditions!

Animations now dovetail into each other seamlessly, with dribbling and shots on goals worked into dribbling animations. More individual skills are also on show, including new flicks and tricks that have a definite showing on the way a game flows.

Crowd reactions to the on-field action are now more varied, with all new chants and cheers. The subtle difference between Home and Away matches will be reproduced, and the crowd will react spontaneously to specific situations in a game, showing their disdain or pleasure as fouls are committed and goals scored. Likewise, the commentary has been altered to offer a fresher, more concise overview of the game.

Master League has been thoroughly renewed with the enhancement of managerial aspects, which enables users to enjoy managing a team for a longer career lifespan. Seen by many as a key contributor to the series' success, the Master League elements in PES 2010 have been bolstered by far-ranging and vital new additions, dedicated to enriching the mode. Further details will be announced shortly.

The Tokyo team has worked to improve the AI of the game, with Teamvision 2.0 implemented. Midfielders and defenders now work together to cover open space and close down attacks, meaning that cover can be provided for lower-ranked defenders. This also has the additional effect of removing soft goals, thus returning PES 2010 to its simulation roots.

In previous PES games, the team formation has determined the movements of the players. PES 2010 introduces a new system wherein the individual attacking and defending nature of the players is integral to the way they play. Each player enjoys unique AI tied into their best abilities, and is reflected in the actions of their team mates.

A new power gauge system allows users to balance their strategy in a quick, but wide-ranging way before a match. Every element -- pass frequency, movement, the line of defense, width of play, or the position of the front line -- can be altered to match those of a favored club. These formulations can be altered at any point, too, with Home and Away matches forcing different circumstances on the user.

An all-new system has been implemented, offering greater control, placing and accuracy.
A new dedicated section of the Tokyo team is committed to improving the online side of PES 2010. More downloadable content is also planned. Team and content updates are planned throughout the game's lifespan. These will make the game even more bespoke to the player's match day needs.

Konami has strengthened its relationship with UEFA and can announce it has secured the exclusive video game rights for the Europa League Licence (formerly known as the UEFA Cup). In addition Konami will be enhancing and developing the use of the UEFA Champions League within PES 2010 to make even better use of the best club football competition in the world.

Judgment day looming for Manchester United following defeat of Blackburn Rovers

Sir Alex Ferguson’s team are a contradiction this season. They are Ferrari without Michael Schumacher, Mike Tyson without the uppercut, but despite the blunting of their edge since you-know-who headed off to Real Madrid in the summer, Manchester United remain one win away from reclaiming top spot in the Premier League.

If that victory comes against Chelsea in six days’ time, then the question marks over United’s credentials without Cristiano Ronaldo will have to be banished. Results are the key factor and, no matter how they come, it’s achieving them that matters.

United laboured to victory over Blackburn. They dominated possession but the Blackburn Rovers penalty area was barely breached until Dimitar Berbatov’s impressive turn and shot opened the scoring on 55 minutes.

Wayne Rooney’s left-foot volley three minutes from full-time was stunning, but it did not mask the problems United had in breaking down a Blackburn team who had arrived at Old Trafford having conceded 16 goals in four previous away games.

Seven days earlier, Chelsea fired five past Sam Allardyce’s team and Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen suggests that it is Carlo Ancelotti’s men who go into Sunday’s summit clash against United with the mark of champions.

Nelsen said: “It is between United and Chelsea for me because they have the experience and the players, but I’m going to throw it out there and pick Chelsea. I’m sorry to say that because I’m a big fan of United and what they do, but I think Chelsea have a lot of game winners and a lot of players who have the ability to change games in the blink of an eye. It will be an intriguing game.”

Without Ronaldo, United are struggling to kill teams off and Nelsen admits that the departure of the Portuguese has diminished the threat posed by the champions.

He said: “It’s logical that, when you lose the world’s best player, it is going to affect your team, but, over the years, we’ve said that about so many players who have left United and the next season someone has stepped up to the plate. They seem to keep producing good team after good team here, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they are there or thereabouts in any competition they are in.”

That United claimed the three points, and a clean sheet, without Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at least underlined their strength in depth. Jonny Evans and Wes Brown proved adequate replacements and at least one of them will face CSKA Moscow tomorrow with Ferdinand still troubled by a calf injury.

Ferguson said: “Rio is having treatment and Ryan Giggs, too. Neither will make Tuesday and we have a fight on our hands to have them ready for Chelsea on Sunday.”

Keeping Berbatov fit will be key for Ferguson. The much-maligned Bulgarian continues to frustrate, but he is also showing signs of being able to handle the pressure of his £30.75  million price tag.

Blackburn manager Allardyce said: “Playing for Manchester United is not an easy thing to do. There is a massive pressure that you live with at United. There’s no hiding here, but Berbatov scored a great goal to get them on their way to winning this game.”

* Gary Neville claims referee Chris Foy was “blatantly wrong” to send him off for the studs-up challenge on Barnsley’s Adam Hammill during the Carling Cup tie at Oakwell last week.

Although Sir Alex Ferguson conceded the Merseyside official had been correct to send Neville off, the United captain, who is banned for three matches, said: “The referee said in his report that I made no attempt to play the ball, which is blatantly wrong, but I won’t appeal it. I got the ball, but it’s impossible to stop in mid-air at that speed.”

Profil of Manchester United

Manchester United are the most successful Premier League club having won the title 10 times. It all began in 1993 when manager Sir Alex Ferguson ended a 26-year wait to lift the Premier League crown.

The signing of Eric Cantona for £1.2m from Leeds United proved a masterstroke as the Frenchman was instrumental in the title victory, along with the likes of Gary Pallister, Denis Irwin, Ryan Giggs and Paul Ince.

United retained the trophy in the following campaign and romped to further titles in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. More silverware was added to the Red Devils' burgeoning trophy cabinet with FA Cup success in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2004, plus League Cup victories in 1992 and 2006.

Perhaps the most memorable time in the club's history was the treble-winning season of 1999 when they added the European Champions League trophy to the league title and FA Cup.

Chelsea briefly broke their league dominance with title wins in 2005 and 2006. But in the 2006/07 season, the Red Devils roared back to regain the Barclays Premiership.

They went one better last season, enjoying their most successful campaign since winning the treble. They saw off the challenge of Chelsea and Arsenal to win an exciting Barclays Premier League title race and defeated the Blues on penalties in the Champions League final after a 1-1 draw between the two sides in Moscow.

Club Heritage

Formed as Newton Heath L&YR F.C in 1878, the club changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. Six years later they clinched the Division One title, then the FA Cup in 1909, and another title triumph in 1911.

Matt Busby became manager in 1945 and steered United to championship victories in 1952, 1956 and 1957. They became the first English club to compete in the European Cup and reached the semi-final, before going out to Real Madrid. Tragedy struck in 1958 when the plane carrying the team home from a European match crashed, killing eight players.

Busby survived and led his rebuilt team to an FA Cup win in 1963, then league titles in 1965 and 1967. United won the European Cup in 1968 with victory over Benfica in the final - the first English club to do so. When Busby resigned in 1969, his successors failed to continue his glorious triumphs and United were relegated five years later.

They managed to regain their top-flight status at the first attempt and later won the FA Cup in 1977. More FA Cup success followed in 1983 and 1985. But it was United's 1990 FA Cup replay win over Crystal Palace that proved to be the springboard to becoming the force they are today.

It saved under-pressure manager Alex Ferguson from losing his job and he went on to win the European Cup Winners' Cup the season after and began their Premier League dominance with the 1993 title.
